About the Role
Summary of Expectations:
• An independently practicing NP is responsible for practicing to the full scope of practice as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.
• The CNRO NP will provide home based visits to support clients who do not have a family physician or who are home-bound.
• The CNRO NP may work independently or in collaboration with other primary care providers.
Assessment:
• Complete a comprehensive health history and assessment. The health history and assessment will be relevant to the client’s reported symptoms and/or the purpose of their visit and the relevant assessment based on the client’s reported symptoms.
• Form a differential diagnosis and order testing as required to confirm or reject the differential diagnosis.
• Order and Interpret laboratory testing and use the results of testing to guide treatment decisions.
• Order imaging studies, interpret the results and use the results of testing to guide treatment decisions.
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
• Communicate a diagnosis or differential diagnosis to the client.
• Develop a treatment plan and communicate the plan to the client.
• Order medications as appropriate to the diagnosis and test findings.
• Ongoing assessment and monitoring as needed based on the diagnosis and treatment plan.
• Consultation and referrals as needed to physicians and allied health professionals.
Collaborative Practice
• Collaborate with primary care providers for those clients who are home-bound.
• Consult and work collaboratively with other healthcare providers as appropriate.
Medical Directives
• Provide medical directives to order vaccines to be provided by CNRO nurse in a clinic setting.
• Provide a corresponding medical directive for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis associated with vaccine administration.
Documentation:
The NP will document in the approved electronic documentation system provided by CNRO. The NP will document based on standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.
Professional Accountability:
The NP in independent practice accountable for her actions and meets the ethical and legal requirement of professional practice as per the College of Nurses of Ontario: Professional Standards for Nurse Practitioners and the Regulated Health Professionals Act.
The NP is responsible to maintain their registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Evidence of registration must be provided to CNRO annually.
The NP is responsible to complete any and all education required to maintain the registration and scope of practice. Evidence of all continuing education must be provided to the CNRO annually.
Liability Insurance
The NP will maintain liability insurance of $2,000,000. Proof of valid liability insurance will be provided to CNRO annually.
Details
The minimum requirements for membership with Community Nursing Registry of Ottawa (CNRO) include:
a current Registration (Extended Class) from the College of Nurses of Ontario,
a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR),
a current Vulnerable Sector Check, and
Mantoux test.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) must have been practicing as a NP for a minimum of 1 year.
